S4D CASE STUDIES...

  1. Sport for development (S4D) harnesses the power of sport to help children improve their health and develop social, educational and leadership skills while playing and having fun. On September 21, 2021, UNICEF Innocenti launched phase II of the Sport for Development research to demonstrate how S4D can be used to help children around the world.
  2. Sport for development has been proven to be effective for solving social issues. However, there are many challenges which need to be solved in order for sport to become a bigger player within the sustainable development goals.
  3. Sport has been recognised as an enabler of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the 2030 Agenda. Organisations worldwide are using sport to contribute to the SDGs and other goals, addressing issues ranging from health and education to employment, and conflict resolution.

OUR THEORY OF CHANGE

SOEAFRICA is working to create opportunities for children and youth, their families and communities through our sustainable child-focused, community-based development programs such as Delft Tennis Club where children are impacted by violence, drug abuse, poverty and global health issues.

We have developed a clear rationale for what we do in our sport for development programs. Our approach if focused on how change for children is driven at three levels: players, Volunteer Coaches and Facilitators and communities

1. PLAYERS

  • Young players complete integrated tennis and life skills learning modules to improve their leadership and life skills, sports skills, attitudes and behaviours in a safe and structured way. Playing as part of a team provides disadvantaged children with access to an expanded support network. Players can carry their learnings back to their communities, and become future coaches in the program.

2.VOLUNTEER COACHES & FACILITATORS

  • Volunteer Coaches and Facilitators are supported to deliver tennis and life skills activities to children in the Delft community. These Volunteer Coaches and Facilitators have increased resilience, confidence, vision, voice and the ability to drive positive change and promote learning in the Delft community. They become active citizens promoting positive social change.

3. COMMUNITIES

  • Community members, including parents and caregivers, allow their children to participate in Delft kids Tennis Club and over time place an increased value on young people’s participation in structured sport. This, in turn, allows parents and caregivers to place an increased value on their children’s participation in activities contributing to positive social change.

Our Story

Charcoal has a lot of potential and different uses. It can be turned into fire, it can be used for art, but it is also nowadays used in health- and beauty products and food. And yet, almost no one sees it as the value it deserves. And then there are diamonds, we all know them as expensive and part of wedding rings and jewelry. But how are diamonds made? Out of charcoal. If you put enough pressure on charcoal, it turns into a diamond.

The kids in the program are charcoal: a lot of potential, they just need the opportunity to evolve into something else. Nobody hands them the chances in life they deserve, and nobody helps them to develop to full potential. Yes, they live in an impoverished environment with a lack of social and parental support. But that does not mean they do not deserve to become successful adults. They need to find their talent, they need to find their passion, they need to be empowered, they need to gain confidence, and most of all: they need to learn to be proud of themselves. And we can show them the way. We cannot make the journey an easy one. But we can guide them and help them find their light. We can turn the charcoal into diamonds. Let them show the world how amazingly beautiful and strong they are. Let them dare to dream, dare to challenge and dare to grow.

I see it every day, kids roaming around on the street – regardless of the age. And yes, we need preschools and daycare. Yes, the kids need food and a safe place to play because they don’t have that at home. But that is not enough. We cannot just feed them, let them play and when they go to primary school we give up on them. Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he can eat every day. We need to empower these kids, we need to help them grow and become confident and independent. That is what the diamond program is about. To help them find themselves and their power
